May Magnesium Help the Treating Depression?
Depression is a global epidemic with over 350 million people affected. Most of these people turn to therapy, prescription medication, and other forms of treatment. However, not all depression sufferers can afford the necessary medications and treatments.
Others are not able to receive an adequate care due to the lack of trained health-care providers. But recently, one scientist has discovered an affordable alternative that can help the treatment of depression at a very low price.
It’s magnesium. This mineral is beneficial for your energy, bones, and even anxiety. But, the bionutrition research manager in the Clinical Research Center and the graduate student in Clinical and Translational Science at the University of Vermont, Emily Tarleton, MS, RD, CD, has discovered another important use of this mineral.
She found out that magnesium can fight depression when taken as an everyday supplement.
Tarleton’s study, published in PloS ONE, suggests that taking 248 mg of magnesium on a daily basis may help reverse symptoms of depression.
As Science Daily explains, it targets the symptoms, and it’s much more affordable option for depression sufferers. And not just that, but magnesium is also a safer option than many prescription drugs for this mental health condition.
The research involved 126 people with mild or moderate depression. They didn’t stop their usual treatment throughout the 12-week study. So, the participants received four 500mg magnesium chloride tablets chloride per day.
Researchers measured their depression symptoms using Patient Health Questionnaire 9. The results reduced symptoms of depression, regardless of age, gender, depression treatment, and depression category.
Still, the research didn’t include a placebo group, so we can’t say a magnesium supplement is 100% effective in the treatment of depression.
OTHER BENEFITS OF MAGNESIUM SUPPLEMENTS
Magnesium plays a lot of important roles in your body. Therefore, lack of this mineral causes many health problems including anxiety, poor digestion, muscle aches and spasms, and trouble sleeping. Here are some of the most important health benefits of magnesium:
- Calms nerves
- Boosts energy levels
- Relieves constipation and improves digestion
- Treats insomnia and helps you fall asleep
- Prevents headaches
- Regulates levels of calcium and potassium
- Prevents osteoporosis
- Helps lower blood pressure
FOOD SOURCES OF MAGNESIUM
Besides taking magnesium as a supplement, you can also find it in many foods. So, the best food sources of this mineral are:
- Pumpkin Seeds
- Kefir or Yogurt
- Black Beans
- Dark Chocolate
Even though the study shows positive results in the treatment of depression when using magnesium supplements, you shouldn’t stop or replace your prescribed therapy with this supplement. Instead, consult your doctor to consider adding it to your treatment.
